Best Time to Schedule Your Newborn Session (And Why It Matters)
I am going to keep it simple and short - One of the most common questions I get from mamas is: when is the best time to schedule a newborn session?
Before anything else, I always start here—how are you doing? How is baby? Are you both mentally and physically feeling okay to even think about photos during such a tender time of bonding?
Because that part matters just as much as the photos.
Now when it comes to timing, the answer really comes down to two things:
Do you want those traditional, sleepy newborn images?
Or are you open to baby being more awake and less posed?
If you’re dreaming of those curly, snuggly, sleepy baby moments—the sweet spot (in my experience) is within the first 2 weeks. Sometimes up to 3 weeks for premie babies.
During this time, babies are still naturally curled up, extra sleepy, and a bit more flexible—which allows for those classic newborn poses.
After about 3 weeks, things start to shift a little. Babies become more alert, more curious, and honestly… they do notwant to miss a thing. Their little reflexes (hello Moro/startle reflex) also kick in, which can make certain poses tricky or just not possible—and that’s okay.
No matter when you choose to schedule your session, I truly pride myself on being a baby-led photographer. This means I follow your baby’s lead the entire time. I never force poses, and I always make sure your baby is comfortable and supported.
Your newborn’s safety will always be the number one priority throughout your entire experience with me.
Because at the end of the day, these moments aren’t about perfection—they’re about preserving your baby exactly as they are.
